Frequently Asked Questions

Dimensions
Our Norwood HD38 can handle logs up to 3 feet in diameter and up to 12 feet long. We have a winch and can easily move even the biggest of logs up onto our mill.

What Can I Mill?
Basically anything. We can tell you what kind of trees are good for different projects, but ultimately there are endless opportunities to make use of nature’s gift to us. Pine is great to create 2X4’s, while oak and walnut are great for furniture-related projects.

How Do I Store Milled Lumber?
Customers will typically stack lumber on their property to air-dry. The ideal conditions for storage will be in an area that is level, has decent airflow, and isn’t in direct sunlight. Once the lumber is cut it’s then stacked with 1 in x 1 in stickers. The customer can provide stickers for the project or you can purchase them from Minnesota Milling. You will typically want 4 stickers per slab.
-
Does MN Milling Buy Trees?
The short answer is no. If you are looking for someone to get it off your property will come over, mill it and remove it for you, but we don’t purchase trees from property owners.
-
Will You Cut Down My Tree?
Minnesota Milling is not trained or equipt to cut down trees for property owners. It would be best to work directly with a tree service for that need.
-
Milling Preperation
We will need access to the logs you want milled. Meaning anything in a swamp or deep in the woods is a no-go. Best option to save money is by having all logs pilled up near a road or an easy access which is level.
-
Moisture Content
Freshly cut logs are wet and heavy. Most people don’t build with wet wood, they often dry it, many kiln dry their lumber especially if you are using it indoors. We can help guide you on this process.
-
Safety
Safety is our biggest concern. We love when you can help us out, its really fun to work on the mill with customers. We give a detailed safety brief at the start of the job, so be sure to listen closely and always keep safety in mind.
